Join the Maryland State Department of Education’s (MSDE) Division of Early Childhood, the National Education Association (NEA), and thousands of schools and programs nationwide to celebrate the 98th Annual American Education Week from November 18-22.

As part of the celebration, the NEA will recognize “Parents Day” for the annual National Invite Parents to a School or Program event on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019. The goal for “Parents Day” is to provide parents and families with a firsthand look at what a typical day is like for their children, says the NEA. “Parents Day” also is a great opportunity for teachers and providers to establish partnerships with parents and families. This annual event recognizes family engagement as a critical component of high-quality early care and education.

“When done well, family engagement practices can support the healthy social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of young children, regardless of ethnic or socioeconomic background,” said the Maryland Family Engagement Coalition.

“Parents Day” meets Goal Three of the Maryland Early Childhood Family Engagement Toolkit, which states family engagement initiatives should support families as lifelong educators of their children. Maryland initiatives and the practices of early care and education providers promote creating collaborative relationships with a variety of service entities to support and empower parents and families in their role as their children’s first teacher. For children and families to be successful, teachers and providers can facilitate families in understanding why the early years of education are so important.

As a matter of fact, the early years set the foundation for children’s success in school and in life. When families help to provide early learning experiences at home, they are more involved and engaged in their children’s learning from the very start. However, the first step in this process is for families to partner with teachers and providers throughout their children’s educational journey.
