Pick the Perfect Tune: 6 Sing-Along Favorites for Lifelong Book Lovers

Little girl reading magic book; fantasy conceptTwinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, or, shall I say, little car?

Young children have always loved reading classic sing-along books. However, modern sing-alongs also have become popular among parents and families who seek to inspire today’s children to sing their way to a lifelong love of reading. With a wide variety of classic sing-along books and newer versions available, how do you pick the perfect tune for your little one? Check out my list of six sing-along books that feature the classics and the remakes.

1. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star: A Musical Instrument Song Book

Listen as animals play musical instruments such as a clarinet, trombone and banjo to the tune of this classic song. Young children will love to press the buttons to hear the instruments.

  • Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Car (remake)

If your child likes classic songs and vehicles, this book will surely be a big hit. The red car sees tractors going to sleep, an airplane flying by, emergency vehicles, construction trucks and even a ferry on its bedtime ride. Sleepy little ones will want to read this one again and again.

2. Baa, Baa, Black Sheep

Join a young girl as she asks the black sheep for wool. Each time the black sheep responds by saying yes, miss, the young girl knits a hat and mittens for kittens, a swing and vest for birds or clothes for the shepherd and Bo Peep, until one day, the sheep has no more wool. The young girl expresses gratitude for the sheep and gives him knitted clothes to stay warm.

  • Car, Car, Truck, Jeep (remake)

If you and your child enjoy the classic song, this version will surely please. Fuel up at the gasoline station and then vroom around with a bus, train and jumbo jet plane! Other modes of transportation in this sing-along board book include a helicopter, a taxi, a big rig, a digger, a dump truck and emergency vehicles. In the end, there’s a wish for sweet dreams. However, you can read this book at any time.

3. Over in the Meadow: An Old Counting Rhyme

In this fun sing-along book, stick through the meadow and practice counting with different mama animals and their little ones. Join the turtles digging, fish swimming, rats gnawing, bees buzzing and more.

  • Push! Dig! Scoop!: A Construction Counting Rhyme (remake)

If your child enjoys the classic animal version of this song, then the truck version is a must. Push with a mama bulldozer and her little one. Scoop with front loaders, spill and pour with dump trucks and spin with the cement mixers. The exhausted trucks all fall asleep at the end. This version is such a fun sing-along book.

4. Hush Little Baby

Snuggle up with a baby bunny and his mama in this calming classic lullaby. Spot a hummingbird, gaze at the evening sky, listen to the crickets, search for a shooting star, read a book and get ready for bed as you sing along.

  • Hush, Little Digger (remake)

If the classic song soothes your child, then the construction truck remake will be a new favorite. Sing with a young boy and his father as they play with a backhoe, front-end loader, dump truck, asphalt paver, bulldozer and more on a day full of adventure.

 5. Old MacDonald Had a Farm

Head to the farm with Old MacDonald and his animals in this chunky board book with cutout illustrations at the top. Sing about cows, pigs, horses, sheep and ducks.

  • Old MacDonald Had a Truck (remake)

If your child is a fan of Old MacDonald’s farm animals, then the farmers’ trucks are sure to excite! In addition to animals, Old MacDonald had a truck, excavator, front loader, bulldozer, dump truck, steamroller, cement mixer and monster truck. Sing-along on the way to the monster truck rally.

6. Wheels on the Bus

Climb aboard the bus with this popular sing-along. Swish the wipers, find a seat, bounce up and down, listen to the horn beep, hear the baby cry and the parents shush in this fun-filled song.

  • The Whales on the Bus (remake)

The whales ride around the town in a water-filled bus driven by a fish. Then birds ride a train. Bees go down the snowy mountain on skis. Sheep race through the mud in a jeep and many more. Enjoy this great sing-along book for bedtime as the llamas in their pajamas fall asleep.
